In addition to its many historical exhibits, the Museum uses unique and extraordinarily extensive dioramas to depict the city of Calistoga during its period as the elegant 1860s hot springs resort established and developed by pioneer, promoter, publisher, entrepreneur, and California's first millionaire, Sam Brannan. Special exhibits, which change quarterly, reflect the varied interests of the people of the Valley. Past special exhibits have covered themes ranging from antique silverware to model ships to historical musical instruments. The Museum was a project of Ben and Bernice Sharpsteen, who retired to a ranch near Calistoga that had been acquired by Ben's grandmother in the 1800s. Ben was an Academy Award-winning animator, producer and director for Walt Disney Studios, and worked on many famous Disney projects. Memorabilia of his career (including one of his Oscars), his hobby (antique autos) and family history are displayed in the Founder's Room of the Museum. In 1978, construction of the museum building and dioramas was completed, and the Sharpsteens donated the entire museum to the City of Calistoga. The museum building adjoins a restored cottage from Brannan's original hot springs resort.
